Primer problem, please read :o)

Morning guys,

I have started my very first job and on my training was instructed to primer walls prior to tiling.

I have recent used a primer which i bought from screwfix: see link below.

after applying some tiles, i had to remove one or two tiles, as I pulled them off it seemed to pull the primer of the wall too showing the wall behind.......i'm abit worried now that this is cr*p primer and coud cause me a problem if i continue the rest of the job.

Can anyone shine any light in this please?

be care ful with primers never prime walls with pva as it doesnt work well with tile adhesive and often just forms a skin on the surface of the wall you are tiling on to always try and use sbr bond mixed down 3:1 with water this will give you a decent primer many adhesive manufacturers make primers one of the best is the ardex 51 which is blue which helps to show you areas where you have applied it if you have used pva scrape it of and start again by the way which adhesive are you using

Smasher the acrylic primer you have used is paint!!! Primers are manufacturer for tiling by adhesive manufacturers not paint makers, you will have major problems, sorry to say....you will have to remove the tiles before they drop off....Gaz

its definately an acrylic primer, but like i say, i removed one or two tiles yesterday just to perfect the cuts and the primer come of with the adhesive like a skin.......i'm abit worried now that this might effect the stability of the tiles when on the wall.

i'm using a nicobond flexi adhesive.

Tilesmasher, it is definately paint primer not primer for tiling!! They are different products, you will need to take the tiles off and redo. I have to agree with Gaz here (i always do anyway!)

BAL Prime APD

A modified acrylic polymer dispersion for use as a primer for a variety of backgrounds/bases prior to fixing ceramic tiles, mosaics and natural stone and prior to the application of levelling compound and the BAL WP1 TANKING SYSTEM. BAL PRIME APD isolates products containing calcium sulphate such as gypsum plaster and anhydrite screeds from cement-based adhesives, thus minimising the risk of reaction between the two materials.

Also suitable for use on cement:sand rendering, blockwork, plasterboard, cement:sand screeds and timber. It also provides surface strength to friable surfaces and reduces the porosity of porous backgrounds/bases, thus preventing the formation of air bubbles and prolonging the flow time with levelling compounds and extending the open time of tile adhesives. The primer is blue in colour to help ensure that a complete and even coating is obtained.

What you have use is Leyland acrylic paint, the surface of the wall is now smothered and you are in effect tiling onto micromillimetres of paint, not an impregnated primed plaster...the above product explains the difference....it isn't paint.....Gaz

Did the course advise you to use this primer or did someone recommend/advise it
or was it simply your mistake?

The guys in screwfix said this would be suitable.....which i'll be complaining about because apparantly their not allowed to give advice!

i've had chance to sort it out now so thanks for the help, clearly my inexperience showing here but i'll know for next time...........good job it's my own bathroom!!

Adhesive manufacturers design their products in systems, generally. If you use, say, adhesive made by BAL, you're best off if you use primer made/recommended by BAL as well, as they're guaranteed to be chemically combatible.

All decent manufacturers of adhesive and otherwise include guidelines on how you're supposed to use their products, and what other products you can combine them with. If you're unsure, always read the product description, and follow the instructions.

Know that many adhesives don't require primer on certain substrates, and that using primer anyways might screw the curing process. Again, read the specs if unsure.

Besides being the safest way to achieve a technically sound result, using products according to manufacturer guidelines is also a matter of liability.
If the product isn't performing as well as the manufacturer says it should, you can usually make a warranty claim, IF you've used it in the manner the manufacturer instructs.
If you use missmatch products, or use them in ways not intended, then the blame and expense is your's alone.

Never trust the peons in larger and/or non-specialist stores. Most of the time, they can barely point you to the correct aisle!
