Primer questions

Hello,

I have a few questions regarding primers. Can you use one brand name primer with another brand name adhesive. Or is this a total nono, and why??

How much primer do you give an absorbent surface, how do you know what enough is, is it just one coat?

How long after applying the primer can you tile?

I tend to use bal apd for any adhesive I'm using, you will find that new plaster will draw the primer in very quick, the more denser the material the longer it will take to dry

You can use a different brand primer and addy but its not recommended coz if theres any problems after you instal the tiles and the addy manufactures have to visit they will blame the whole thing on that.

Just enquiring m8. Im very new to the tiling game, Ive always got random questions i like answering.

Lets say plywood, plasterboard, finish plaster, how many coats of primer would you give these? How long the coats taking to dry?

On ply i normally use a neat coat of Bal bond, on plaster board it depend on what addy yer using, if a tubbed most say you dont need to prime but with a bag of dust you will, its worth giving it a caot anyway imo, and on a plaster finish some tubbed say its okay to go direct so long as u scratch up a bit but i would give it a coating wiv Bal bond, i nornally do around 3 to 1 mix.

Most times one coat except for anhydrite screeds which 2 coats is recommended, always read the instructions on the bottle, some primers vary.

I know its been said a million times but for the benefit of Golddigger....BAL recommend that you prime the UNDERSIDE of the ply and not the face,so as mentioned by Wivers,they have a comeback (BAL)if you havent done this to their spec..so always read the tub/bag?(adhesive)

Usually most acrylic primers will be suitable for most brands of adhesivCheck with manufacturer or manufacturers PDF details on website.. some adhesives do not require primer.
Usually most important is priming plaster / gypsum with cement adhesives.
Prime under side of plywoood not face with most flexi adhesives

I used to use Nicobond acrylic until I couldn't get it any more. Now I use Bal.

i thought you were using Mapei D1 Fred,or cant you get it for £4.99 anymore?ctd are selling it for that price plus vat up here in Glasgow.Also my supplier has stopped stocking it as he cant compete with the bigger stores.

also cementious adhesive only on skimming/render/plaster?
