tilersforums.com started out many years ago, and over the years we've needed to evolve a few times.
In about 2010 we had discussions between moderators and regular members and we felt the need to cut down on people using the forum private messaging system to sell to members under the radar and out of the eyes of the forum. We had a number of reps from firms posing as tilers and simply using the PM system to contact members to sell products to them.
We started monitoring private messages for that reason.
However just lately we feel that the private messaging system should be just that, private. So we've taken away the option for administrators (and it was only ever administrators) ability to read private messages. Nobody can read them now expect the sender and receiver.
Clearly now if you would like to bring to the attention a private message that is threatening or is somebody annoying you by trying to sell to you without you asking them to contact you, then you will simply need to report the private message as you would a forum thread.
What happens then is, it informs the moderators of the private message, who will then see a copy of the message in the 'reported PM thread' that automatically gets created in the moderators forum. They can then discuss action, and take it where required.
That is the only time your PM will be read by anybody but yourselves.
Unlike with cheaper forum software we can't access the database of private messages at all by way of clicking just three links and searching for a member name to read your 'conversations'. Our forum software doesn't allow it at all.
So you can be sure that your private messages are fully private and nobody is reading them but you.
Thanks for your time.
