I recently bought some quarry tiles to lay in a black-red checked pattern. The black tiles are rough on top (maybe antislip or something), and this is proving troublesome.

Basically, I'm not the tidiest tiler in the world, and managed to get some adhesive on the face of the tiles. Cleaning the red ones was no problem. Cleaning the black ones was a nightmare. Now I'm grouting, which naturally creates the same issue. Cleaning the tiles as I go seems the right idea, but risks messing up the grout in the gaps.

Should I seal the tiles first? Will this help with the rough ones, anyway?

Any advice appreciated.

yes, as plan tech above seal first with a suitable impregnator (for unglazed ceramic) prior to grout, leave this min 12 hr (if solvent) to cure then test grout release; if you have a slight residue left after the grouting , once fully dry , work over with a suitable residue remover, wet your joints first (just clean water)so the product is working on the tile surface not on your joint; important , always test a sealed tile for the grout release first, the impregnator will line the capillary of the tile not fill it , so we can still get grout caught in these pores, even if sealed ;test first on spare un laid tile (if you can);if problem , we need to approach floor area differently.
