Looked at a job today, the customer has a kitchen floor laid with quarry tiles, they have just moved into the very old property and are having a £45,000 kitchen fitted by a mate of mine. The floor is 25sqm and there is 1 sqm which has been laid with new tiles, so i have to remove the 1 sqm a relay with old matching tiles, strip the polish all the tiles and re polish the whole lot....I have got the job, what would you have quoted?

Kev, if its not being too cheeky maybe you could tell us how you would go about restoring a quarry tile floor. In the past i have done this with HG cleaners and the like but i have never been totally happy with the results even though clients have.

Never too cheeky mate if it helps others on the forum. I refer to two different ones I have done recently.

The first was fairly simple it was just years and years of god knows what Polish/Wax/Emulsion etc etc. I started by using Aqua Mix Sealing and Coating remover then washing off after dwell times etc. Then I used Aqua Mix Heavy duty Tile and Grout cleaner backed up with some Aqua Mix Nanoscrub and using a medium nylon brush on my machine to work it in. Then a good wash off and vac and repeated until clean. I left it for a few days to dry and then applied two coats of Aqua Mix Enrich and Seal to intensify the colour and seal it then I buffed off with a white pad.

The second floor was a lot more problematical in that it had 5 coats of ronseal varnish applied to it over 17 years. I attacked that very much the same as in the example above but using 4 coats of Sealing and Coating remover and a lot more scrubbing and patience. The major problem however was the floor was about 120 years old and efflorescence was prevalent everywhere. However, the efflorescence had really calcified over the years under the varnish so some of it had to brushed off using a tynex head added to which a lot of the quarries had spalled and consequently the faces were off. However, the client found the result satisfactory and was very happy at the end of the day. We did however have a continuing problem with effloerescence which took nearly two weeks to solve due to the earth substrate.

Hope this helps

Kev
