Hi,

I'm hoping, once my present job finishes to retrain as a tiler. Having joined several weeks ago and read a lot of the postings, I do have a few questions:

1. Do any of the courses anybody has attended provide manuals with pretty pictures to acompany the course?

2. If the answer to the above is a 'no' how do you new tilers go on in case of dificulty or you're unsure about something?

3, Any books to recommend on the subject?

4. Do any courses also cover tiling difficult areas like uneven walls, floors, surfaces etc.?

5. Any course you know of that don't allow the use of adhesives and grout by the user, especially on the floor? (I don't fancy just laying patterns of tiles on the floor and then watching a demo on how it's done)

6. Anybody used either of these in Dorset: Learn to Tile - Tiling Courses in Dorset. Tiling Training
Wall and Floor Tiling Courses at High Lea Tiling Centre Dorset UK 2

The courses i'm interested in so far are Chase Tiling Academy, UK Tiling Courses

besides ceramic tiling, is it usual for courses to offer training or even guidance in laying marble/slate/terracotta tiles?

Sorry for all the questions, I've been building them up since I started reading this site.

Thanks for any help
Si

Hiya DoresetLad,

I'll try and answer some of your questions.

1. Generally you should get some course notes or in some centres they will get you to take your own notes so that you understand them better when you leave. Pictures I'm not too sure of although you may get a few diagrams and such-like.
2. If you are ever stuck with anything after the course you should be able to give the training centre a call. You could even call adhesive manufacturer technical lines if it's a query you have related to the background you're tiling or whatever. And then there's always the forum here too.
3. There are loads of good reads on the web if you look around. And if you do a sarch on here for 'weber tiling guide' you should find the.... weber tiling guide which is a good example. Although I wouldn't recommend Amazon tiling books etc due to them not always being applicable to the U.K.

Perhaps the other guys can answer your other questions.

Try PTS in Essex, they address all your questions (except no. 3), and yes you do get pretty drawings in their training manual, also they are always available to give advice once you leave. Don't know of any tiling books though, certainly not much in Waterstones last time I looked!

I have the weber guide and it is a good reference though biased towards their products obviously. Tilersforums have loads of experience and everyone here is happy to help if they can.
