Quote or estimate?

Do you guys give a quote or an estimate when pricing for a job?

I give a quote but with the terms stated that it is for what I have listed and any extras are payable.

Same as above, quote for me with a schedule of works and terms & conditions. If its not written down, it hasn't been quoted for. I also discuss any extra's or additional works with the customer before they are carried out and get email confirmation from them to proceed and accepting the additional costs. This is really easy to do these days with smart phones.

Same as Stewart. My t&c's are included with every quote state that the quote is based on what is known (can be seen) and any remedial (or in some jobs substantial) works to prepare substrate etc will incur an additional cost. I do always highlight this and the potential costs to the customer at the very beginning as we all know what horrors are lurking behind some tiled surfaces!!!

My t&c's are nearly an A4 page long now...... I know for a fact that nobody reads them though, as they always ask me questions which are there written in black & white!!! At least I know I am covered as they sign a copy of quote inc t&c's prior to any work commencing. I also have a few disclaimers written up for various types of jobs too

I have provided an estimate on the odd occasion for people who want a badly fitted wet room ripped out & replaced as leaking into the room downstairs

Same as. I quote almost all the time unless Im pricing off plan or there is a lot of work to do by other trades before I go in. Had a chat with a guy the other day who only ever sends an estimate, thought it was odd.

Same as Sir Ramic. Quote for spec but clearly state extras not included in quote will be charged at day rate unless otherwise agreed.

I never estimate, the customer gets a full quote and as above it's made known that unforeseen work is charged for.

always quote for work to be done excluding extras that always pop up, but when doing full bathroom refurbs always estimate materials as i never know what I'm going to find. for example i did a bathroom last week and there was more pipe work in it than an oil refinery i still don't know were most of it was heading probably feeding the whole st.

Been burnt too many times quoting full bathroom rip outs - always estimate these now and go through with customer worse case scenario.

I provide a full written comprehensive quote for all of my bathroom jobs, i do spend quite a long time at the site survey stage and can pretty much pre empt any unforeseen work, i do provides estimates for some people whom I assume are only testing the water.
