Random Floor Pattern

Hi Guys ,

Have been asked by a friend to tile their hallway in a random pattern (as shown in picture), told them i have never done it before but they are happy for me to have a go, and i think i'll be able to do it but just need some advice first.

How is the best way to go about doing a pattern like this ie setting out, & do you start with large tiles and cut them or do you buy in tiles of the various sizes ?

Any feedback would be most welcome

Hi John, most tile shops have pattern sheets like daves, and different patterns have a different no of tile sizes/quantitys. Dry lay any pattern first to give yourself a stater for ten!

The shop might supply a layout plan of the patten,i always ask for it.

Could try and use a sheet of paper (linning paper with sheets taped together), lay each tile onto paper and mark round each tile, when complete cut out whole pattern and use as a template to help in setting out, just a thought

Set it out in the normal way, using a staff made with the smallest tile in the pattern.

For that design I have always worked out what size a double pattern is and worked from there. If you check out my gallery There are 2 pics of a travertine floor I have done that is the exact same design, it might help, it might not but it will show you a bigger finished floor for your referance.

Good luck and just take as long as you need to plan and set out as it shows that the time spent was worth it in the end.

I have done a similar thing with limestone then only problem was the smaller tiles being exactly half the size of the bigger one,meaning if you put a spacer in, the other tile would overlap.I had to shave a bit off two sides of the small ones and one side of the medium ones i think.The manufacturers should of accounted for this fact.
