Red substrate

Afternoon all. I have just started to remove the old tiles in my hallway and the substrate underneath is red in colour, very solid like a concrete slab would be, just wondered if anyone recognises what it is and if its safe. Being a 60's house there was a lot of asbestos used in those days and I'm a little concerned. Thanks for the replies.

Could be I suppose, its a solid piece. Excuse my ignorance on the matter, I've never seen such a thing before! Can terrazzo be laid in such a way? as in poured like concrete, as that is what it looks like.

Yep, poured then honed.

Was that quite a common floor covering in the 60/70's then? And is it safe!!!!!

I guess it was one of those fashion things , a certain time and place !.
I remember terrazzo being very popular in the late 70`s when I was starting tiling. Mainly hospitals though and usually cream/white.

Thanks for the help Neale, I'll crack on now that I know it's not going to kill me and, more importantly, my family. The inlaws would kick off if I killed their daughter and grandchild!

I will stand corrected though, it could be a poured red concrete....they tried lots of methods in those days but its my guess its terrazzo or a similar product. I dont think there is any health risks.

I've just got to the front door and I can see the edge, it looks like it could be either!!! It's sound so I'm just going to level over and carry on. Thanks again for the help.

Wouldn't terrazzo have flecks? Is it the whole substrate, not a covering like a epoxy paint?

It could be a resin type screed.
