Replacing a concrete doorstep on a period property

Hi,


Ive got a job where the gas board need to re-install a gas pipe so it runs beneath the doorstep of a Victorian terrace (photo shows it currently running above the existing step prior to this procedure). They're completely removing the doorstep and I have to replace the doorstep and re-tile it. Ive never constructed a concrete doorstep before and need some advice please.


Does it need a membrane beneath?


Does it need hardcore beneath?


Do I need to cover the gas pipe (its active) with a sleeve or something before concreting it in?


The doorstep will be located/inset into an alcove type doorway. Will the concrete expand as it cures to damage the decorative wall tiles and brick wall either side of it, and if so are there any preventative measures I should be taking?


What kind of mix should I use?

If I have trouble getting it completely flat/level, can I poor a self-levelling compound onto a concrete base?


Is there anything else I need to be aware of?
