Is there any way to do this, ie, interesting websites that hold data on builders that joe public can access? I know dom from cowboy builders does it?

Not that I know of but doesn't take long to find out about someone. Search phone numbers, Domain Whois, addresses etc on google

If their a Ltd company, you can find out so much more. You can see their accounts etc. Companies House is a good place to start on Ltd companies

That's exactly right. You can see who directors of companies are and if the companies still trading, if the individuals are bankrupt etc.
