Hi,
my son has taken up the tiles on his bathroom floor in his new house. Some of the old adhesive came away cleanly, but much did not. He has no idea what the adhesive is, but it is dark grey.
He has tried scraping and chiselling to no avail, except he now has some chunks out of the chipboard! The chipboard might not be moisture resistant, as its not green.. it is also not exactly rigid...
As the previous tiles were ok except for one crack in the grouting, he would like to take a chance on retiling. the area is about 3 sqmtrs.
Q1. What primer should he use?
Q2. How to file any holes in the floor?
Q3. Best adhesive and (grey) grout? (needs to be fast setting as the one and only loo needs to go back in asap!)
Q4. Is he mad?

many thanks in advance for your advice.

I would rip the chipboard up, this will save time in trying to clean and repair it. Replace with 18mm or thicker if you can WBP Ply. Maybe even a few extra noggins across the jooists while you have the floor up ?
There you have a nice new floor to tile on.
Personally my method would be replace floor with the mentioned 18mm WBP Ply and then a 6mm tile backer board. Hardibacker or NoMorePly.
Do it once and do it right.

He is going to have to take the chipboard up anyway as you have said it is not rigid, Tiling on to this would be asking for trouble. As the guys above have said, Id rip the chipboard out (I refuse to tile onto even the green stuff), lay 18mm WBP ply after sealing the underside and sides and then over lay with a backer board (like no more ply or hardie). . This would give you as good a substrate to tile onto as you are likely to get. As for adhesive and grout, you would want a single part adhesive, I use Mapei and swear by it so Id use (Mapei) Keraquick and for the grout Id use (Mapei) Ultracolour.

Hi folks,
thank you for your help. My son asks if he would get away with screwing down any moving parts of the chipboard, and then glueing/screwing down a sheet of 6 mm ply. that would cover the whols floor in one go, and give a reasonable tiling surface. if thats an option, what would be best for glueing the ply, and for priming/sealing the ply?
thanks again:smilewinkgrin:

Its not an option if you want to do it right, all the above advice should be followed.
6mm ply has no place in a bathroom.
