saveing slate tiles!

Hello,
ive recently had the kitchen floor done with indian slate but it hasnt gone to plan! It was laid by a family member who says he is a tiler but clearly isnt!
There are steps of upto 7mm between tiles and grout everywhere!
Ihave heard both these things can be fixed but how and will I be able to do it myself?
Any advice will be greatly acepted

Chis is it uncalibrated slate? i:e different thicknesses?

I'd rip it up and start again. Probably not what you want to hear but even if you chisel off the worst of the lips, you've still got grout all over the tiles that'll be very difficult to remove. You'd still be disappointed with it hence my recommendation.

the grout is possible to make better but 7mm! That's a big ask.
