You go to price up a job, when you get there the walls are plaster board with tiles from floor to half way, above tiles is wallpaper. So with the customers consent you beleive best to replace all plaster board. So give quote for removal and replacing plasterboard, and for tiling. All ok.
When you get to start the job where as you thought behind plasterboard was a wooden frame actually turns out to be dot and dab onto the big grey building blocks. Between block work and plasterboard is a gap of about 20mm due to micro bore pipes for rad not being sunk into block work but stand proud.

can you answer these questions on the info above.

1) when quoting for jobs what do you take with you to check substrates?
2)would you need to replace plasterboard or just remove tiles and wallpaper and tile on existing plasterboard?
3)If replacing plasterboard how would you secure plasterboard to walls.

If you need more info then just ask.

p.s. New tiles would be ceramic 303x480x10mm

1-i do usually check and see if i can remove something to see whats behind
2-if you can remove tiles and wallpaper leaving yourself a good surface to work on then yes! if not the whole lot goes😳
3-dot and dab it to the walls and mechanically fix it with good solid fixings

1, use my knuckle to tap the wall and see if it's hollow, I usually have a good idea by the age of the house and a good visual

2, As above

3, I would dot and dab plasterboard with large amounts of adhesive, 20mm is quite a gap though, if you do use fixings make sure you don't break thru the paper surface or it becomes useless.

Make sure the fixings go thru where the dot's of addy are otherwise you pull the board towards the blockwork

You can get a propper adhesive for sticking plasterboard up dot an dab , think B&Q sell it , ive had to use it before and it sticks like s**t to a blanket lol

I always put a clause into written quotes covering my ar*e for unexpected problems. You can't always check and like in this case how were you to know?
As per previous posts I'd dot n dab new board up or alternatively put battons up and screw plasterboard directly to them. The latter option will take you much longer!
