Self levelling compound over adhesive

I need to lay self levelling compound on my kitchen floor so that I can lay new vinyl tiles. However after removing the old vinyl tiles I have had problems removing all the old adhesive. It is a brown rubbery substance which I have been using white spirit and a scraper to remove. But no matter how much I scrape at it there is always a sticky residue. Are there any self levelling compounds that can be laid over the top? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tan, check out something called Ardex Feather Finish. it is not a levelling compound but a substance you can use to smooth over the top of the old adhesive. I have successfully used it to cover over old bitumen based adhesive that held parquet flooring down.

Many years ago (17?) I laid some vinyl floor for my sister over adhesive residue left over from vinyl tiles. These tiles had been stuck down onto a concrete floor, and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't remove all the adhesive.

I just got some cheap self levelling compound from Wickes and applied it over. It did the trick but I was only laying a vinyl floor covering.

As long as any loose adhesive is removed, you can self level over old adhesive residue, but do follow the SLC instructions on priming, so the SLC gets sufficient grip.
