Exactly - I've seen this done bespoke by a designers in a few places - not tiled surface though - but the problems of a manky water smell where it holds in hidden places and the clogging of hair etc makes it not so good. One place was the Foster & Partners built building just by Battersea Bridge (the curvy one) the shower rooms have this feature - in acrylic I think not tiled - but with a visble gap around each side for the water to go down and you pulled the 'top' off to access the pan underneath. This new one doesnt even have that does it! Servicing / cleaning would be tricky methinks.
