Single or 2 part Adhesive????

B

Baines

Good Evening All,

Intially I must thank you all for the advice posted on this site - its got me to the stage where my floor is prepared, tiles are bought and I'm nearly ready to start ..........

I am laying 400x400 Brazilian Slate (really well calibrated) throughout a hallway (wood) and kitchen (concrete)

I have replaced the floorboards in the hallway with 25mm WBP screwed at 100 centres with extra noggins betwen the joists. The ply was primed back and sides before laying.

Now the questions:

1) Which adhesive should I use? I have looked at the Mapei flexable single part stuff sold a t B&Q - the price seemed reasonable. I was then told by a 'mate' to use a 2 part adhesive with the latex additive - any advice appreciated.

2) Should I just apply adhesive to the floor before laying or also give the back of the slate a covering? As I said the slate is very well calibrated so the backs are completely smooth.

Any help is much appreciated.
Have a good week,
Baines

Baines - Good evening!

Do you intend to tile straight onto the 25mm prepared plywood or are you going to overlay a 6mm tile backer board? (This will eliminate any cracking along the plywood joints)
Is the height of the hallway floor the same as the concrete floor in the kitchen? (Take the backer board over the wood to the concrete and screed down to the concrete)
Are you going to seal the slate before or after fixing? ( work clean)
You will need a flexible adhesive for the wood part but not required for the concrete - however with a smooth back the flexible would be better.
Always use a 8-10mm trowel and screed the floor and flat back the tile to ensure 100% solid fixing.
Seal the slate before grouting - grout - clean off - allow to dry 2/3 days and seal again.
When all done clean and dry - 1/2 coats of satin polish.
Beautiful!
John.

Timeless John - many thanks for the advice.

I planned to seal the slate before laying then again after grouting.

Regarding the adhesive - you said 'screed the floor and flat back the tile' - apologies for my ignorance but could you explain a bit more. I'm not a tiler just a (very) ambitious DIY'er!!

Think I will use the Single part Flexable adhesive by Mapei - seems like ti should be suitable.
Thanks again

whats meant by this is applying the adhesive to the floor using the round notched trowel to show the waved effect on the floor, and also apply adhesive to the back of the tile with the flush side of the trowel so it is flat!
hope this helps
