Q

quick draw macgraw

Hi all,

Thinking of doing mates kitchen but under flaky vinyl tiles are floor tiles but not sure what kind as they look ancient would i clean with sugar soap and put sand and cement coat over before tiling. Also where this meets new extension concrete floor there is a 10mm difference where hes put a sort of radius curve up to old floor so this would only affect three tiles where the archway goes from new to old room would it be advisable to lay these three tiles down with a backskim as well just to angle them into the new room then back to normal again for rest of floor? Is the concrete just pva'd or primed prior to tiling.

Cheers steve.

This is a hard one to advise about really...because if it is an old tiled floor i.e. 40 yrs+ then it has probaly been laid on a sand/cement bed... this bed is then laid on top of a thin bed of sand which acts as a movement barrier between tile bed and substrate....
My point is this... the new tiles must be fixed in away that the movement in the old tiled floor does not debond the new ones... so my advise would be to use an uncoupling membrane in this instance...such as ditra mat this will absorb any stress thus inccurred from the origonal floor... other option is to remove the old tiles and screed the floor.... what i mean by movement is...different substrates move at different rates ....

other point you mentioned.....use a primer and not pva......
