Just watched the clip (scanned through it in 2 mins). Basically Ash that is a tanking gum (liquid membrane) using the fibre as a reinforcement tape. Essentially the same as the Bal, Mapei & Ardex systems out there.

I use Mapei who have a few different joint tapes (Mapeband) and fibre sheets (mapetex anti fracture membrane) available which when laid is impregnated with the gum (Mapegum, mapelastic or aqua defense) to provide a strong, flexible but waterproof installation.

Again, the gums can be applied by trowel, broad knife (or filing knife as in the video), roller, brush or even spray! I prefer to use a 4" or 10" roller with a 3" brush in the joints.

To answer your questions ash, no this type of installation shouldn't fail as the gum is a rubberised paint and is very flexible.

Yep great product, totally agree! Until u forget the tile you're going over the Ardex with is a translucent white mix! (Like I did!) Turning the jet black white first is no mean feat. Haha How do you tackle that Geoff?
Sorry, Hi I'm Marc by the way.

Each layer is applied in a different direction to the last to allow you to see where needed to be applied. That is why I prefer rollers & brushes as it leaves direction marks. Is that what you are referring to? (Sorry I'm not sure if I understood your question correctly!)
No, sorry Geoff, that's a habit that's obviously rubbed off on me from the wife, talking in riddles and expecting the other person to fill in the blanks!
Because the tile I was fitting is a 20x20mm translucent white mosaic and the Ardex Tanking is jet black, I was worried the black would bleed thro. So I wanted the background to be white first. Just wondered if that was a situation that ever applied to you?
