Tanking onto Hardiebacker or Tilebacker

Hi All, just a quick question?, in say, for example a domestic bath/shower room would you still tank the walls when you have installed Hardiebacker or Gypsum Tilebacker board onto the studwork or do you only tank when installing onto normal plasterboard where replacement isn't an option?

Hardie is only water resistant not waterproof, so tanking is advised.

Thanks Whitebeam, I was aware of that but was just thinking that as it claims to be rot proof, swell proof, crack proof, warp proof and has mould block built in, and then the tiles are installed using a cement based addy then how much damage can water actually do to it?, is it therefore a waste of time to replace standard plasterboard in wet areas and better just to tank instead?

I would say a domestic shower over a bath or cubicle , hardibacker is fine..(joints need sealing though) but not in a wetroom .. needs to be fully water tight for me.

Thanks David, yes that's what I was thinking, and of course only for over bath showers and cubicles, I always seal my joints with Fibatape and then go over that with addy before tiling and I totally agree with you on the wet room front 100%
