What are the best techniques for checking how straight walls are
before preparing to tile? and maybe marking out the problem areas with a pen.

nice big level across it and pencil in areas for concern....make adjustments as you tile....Gaz

buy a plasterers feather edge 1.8m from wicks about £12 place along wall mark low spots, fill low spots then recheck with the straight edge

I check with a 2m level on all walls. Put up my battens, and knowing where the errors are, accomadate for it with more or less addy. Thats why I always use powder gear on walls.

Yep, long spirit level and pack with extra adhesive where required, unless the dips in the wall are too deep, then prep work will be needed.

Always use a plasters straight edge as well you will see all the low spots with ease.
