Terracotta tiles

Has anyone any experience with new terracotta tiles (tomettes)? i have laid a new floor and impregnted them with a mix of linseed oil and turpentine. I wondered how long I should leave them before waxing. Any ideas? The quicker the better as I need to use the floor as it takes me from the kitchen to the dining room!

4 coats of 50/50 oil and turps. Won't take any more oil now so guess it is saturated.

Sound... i would grout now and then when grouted/cleaned off and dry.. then wax..

As Pete say's.. i assumed you removed excess oil residue that had not soaked in...

4 coats unless they are mex carillo then oil wont do anything but soak through but haven't seen them for years no good using oil on them

Yes I did wipe off the excess and they came from a local tuilerie here where I live in SW France. They are hand made and we feel very privelidged to have them!
Will post photos when it is finished - which may be a while!!

Enlighten us then pete.. boiled linseed thinned and applied to saturation and buffed off before drying isn't the way then.?. must be a terracotta i have not seen or used then... but saying that a lot of years since i used boiled linseed oil and bri-wax.... modern methods for me nowadays..

I haven't seen any tiles French tiles called "tomettes" before, but I did lay some porcelain tiles from Thailand last week. You know the sort, the extra special quality ones, from the Tourettes range...:incazzato:

Tomettes is the local name for hand made terracotta tiles.

mex carillo you couldn't use oil on them they were to porous had to use different sealers on them those were the days lol i didn't use wax IMO it just attracted the dirt and made it hard work to maintain

Never used them pete, hence asking what you do.. all the cotta i used was Jamie pott's specials ... lol those were not bad to seal... normally 7 coats min.. even the days when we used CTD stock they were fine.. the day's before CTD sold out to Sain gobain..lol..

Yes. And Tourettes is what one develops when laying tiles manufactured in Thailand...

i did an orangery a few years ago ,was the last time i did any,with the odd sheet of mosaic terracotta two different depths the field/mosaic,i had to set a ceramic-floor tile under the mosaic to build them up to the correct level ,

even tiled quiet a few shop floors with them :yikes: even grouted some before they were sealed

We grout ours before we seal them - don't like the idea of loosening any whilst crawling around oiling them - so we lay them, grout them, clean them,oil them (many times!), wax them, polish them and THEN we can walk on them. Guess it is hard work but it's worth the effort to get the authentic look. Off for a lie down now!!
