4 coats unless they are mex carillo then oil wont do anything but soak through but haven't seen them for years no good using oil on them

Enlighten us then pete.. boiled linseed thinned and applied to saturation and buffed off before drying isn't the way then.?. must be a terracotta i have not seen or used then... but saying that a lot of years since i used boiled linseed oil and bri-wax.... modern methods for me nowadays..

mex carillo you couldn't use oil on them they were to porous had to use different sealers on them those were the days lol i didn't use wax IMO it just attracted the dirt and made it hard work to maintain
