The Dot and Dabbers are still about!

On the surface this 5yr old job looked a very professional job,on the surface!

This was a job I mentioned in a previous thread. The only visible problem was a crack in the floor tile which was due to the edge of the 18mm wbp being unsupported(the joint running up to the direction of the bath waste)

Can't quite work out the mentality given the tile is combed and then dotted?? Oh well... Someone was presumably happy with it..

So it's ok to Dot & Dab, but only give a 5 year guarantee!

I had to grout a Dot & Dab job a few months ago. The grout lines literally hoovered up the grout. Took ages to dry enough so that I could wipe down.

First sentence is a joke BTW!!

The customer must have been watching the so called tiler combing the addy on the tile or maybe popped into the room to give him a cup of tea. Then when the customer is out of site he quickly changed back to Dot & Dab. Or, they employ lookouts. Just my theory.

You've hit the nail on the head........the customer was not living in the property at the time.
The floor also had wet UFH underneath........Kingspan between the joists,then the pipework,then the alloy tray!!!!!!!

I was given some tips recently by a dot and dabber (he didn't know what I did for a living). He told me how him and his mate can usually get a bathroom done over two weekends. First weekend skim the room as it's best to tile onto fresh plaster and the following weekend just dot and dab the tiles on. Simples!

I'm on a job this week thats even worse...believe it or not. The tiles in the bathrooms and kitchen are all fixed with dot an dab..........but using silicon. Even some of the floor tiles are done this way....the sub base is anhydrite with ufh. Its a new house that the customer moved into this time last year and I'm retiling the whole lot. The builder does his own tiling....lol.

Why do some so called tilers use this bad practice,does it save on adhesive ?,its just as easy to comb the wall or floor and back the tile ,me for one could never do this.
