Hi All

I am doing a kitchen splashback soon.

I had the guy remove the old tiles first but as expected he couldnt get all of the old adhesive off and because a new kitchen had just been fitted he was very reluctant to get the plasterboard replaced.

I recommended he have it skimmed so he did. The plasterer took just over an hour to complete the four walls (pretty quick i think), its not the best job because he knew it was going to be tiled on, but I think the plaster is a bit thin in places. These photos show the walls before skimming, I dont have any after it was done, but if you look at the wall showing the edge of the worktop, the skim coat has been applied flush with the wallpaper. too thin perhaps (1-2mm)??

wallpaper steamer!!! good advice UUg thanks, I'll remember that one.

To be honest in places the plaster is barely 2mm thick and where it is very thin it has cracked.

The guy is pretty much depending on me to point him in the right direction.

If it needs another skim coat then there will be a step between the old wall and the newly plastered wall.

What I might do is go around and stick a couple of tiles on the wall, then go back the next day and try and pull em off the wall. If they come off it will need to be redone i'd imagine.

Have a good look at the plaster, see if you can pull any off where the cracking has occured. If you tap it with your fingernail you can usually hear where the hollow bits are and these are the bits that will come away in time.

What tile are going on? Heavy/large tiles are more likely to cause a problem.

PS let us know the outcome won't you?
