I've got a floating floor to do (Yeah, I know!!), approx 40 sqm. Currently the client has 150mm sq tiles which have been down for over 12 years and not one crack in site, gout or otherwise???

They want to go with a 3 tile porcelain pattern.

I have said that I will only take on the job if they allow me to utilise a decoupling membrane but height is an issue. They don't want to exceed the current threshold heights which are flush with the oak flooring in adjoining rooms.

I normally use Ditra or Durabase which are both 3mm thick plus addy but would like to know if anyone can suggest a thinner alternative, please?

Hi m8

If you have a floating floor then first I would not recomend tiling on it second if you go adead you need a true uncoupling membrane such as Dura-ci or a ditra mat.

A membrane under the standard 3mm ish depth will NOT do what you are asking of it, I dont care how many airports pecilastic have done and Mapetex is not made for the market its a release membrane with crack bridging properties....................

Thanks to WetDec's comment, I just caught the "floating floor" thing....what is the product or method that is available in the UK for a floating floor of tile? Just curious, don't mean to get :eek:fftopic:.

Also, here in the US there is a lot of controversy in the tile industry about what exactly is the definition of a decoupling membrane vs a crack isolation membrane. They end up getting used interchangeably, and some in the industry even challenge whether Ditra actually qualifies for a "decoupling membrane" , whatever it might actually mean.

Decoupling means decoupling / uncoupling it is a seperation layer allowing 2 planes to become seperated in this case under stress.

Dura-ci & ditra are true uncoupling membranes as they have a lower shear strength lower surface and can be used on green screeds.

Pecilastic & dura-wp shouldn't be used on green screeds as they do not allow the escape of moisture required for total drying in the same way CI and dtra. Peci and WP also have a lower movement capacity.

While both can be considered for uncoupling, wet heated new screeds, suspect or large floors suceptible to lateral movement should imo use a true uncoupling membrane..................

Hope this helps a little................
