Tile Adhesive not setting

Hello!

I recently plastered a wall before I tiled it. Plaster would not dry (old stuff I had in a bag). So scrapped it all off and re-did it with a Fresh bag. Job done.

Now I have tiled 3 x large limetsone tiles with the self mix adhesive recommended by tops tiles. The adhesive set no problem within 3 hours as the packet suggested last year. Now it is not setting!

Now this bag is about 18 months old, stored in a dry indoor room.

Has it gone off?

Hello and welcome.. not 100% sure what you mean but if you are asking has the old tile adhesive left in the bag gone off after 18 months.. then yes.. it will be 12 months from date of manufacture..

Probably, yeah. They do normally state on the bag (if you still have it have a read) use within *** months/years. Sounds like yours has gone off. Even dry storage can start the chemical reaction as dry to us isn't always dry dry. Would need to be a warmish dry room to last a longer time. 18 months, it's done a winter and a half nearly. Let alone the lack of warmth during our last summer!

Yes Adhesive is old stock I had in.

Should I scrape the Tiles off now?

You have used this to stick tiles on now.. as in 18 month old adhesive..?..

The shelf life is firstly for Chromium Vi and then it can to lump from there on.. but if it mixed up ok and has set then no probs..

I bought the tiles and the adhesive over 18 months ago. Tiled one wall and they stuck like poo to a blanket.

Now come to tile the other wall with the same adhesive, not setting!.

Ahh right ok.. then it is knacked.. remove and buy some more sticky..

It is Excel Bond Flexible Rapid 3 hour, can't make out the date.

I also have some Excel Limestone Grout but definitely no Date on Packet

I'd not use that either then mate. We recommend Mapei, but any adhesive will not have a very long lifespan.

Another thing, why did you plaster the wall before tiling it?

If you are tiling plasterboard you don't need to skim it. If I am correct unskimmed plasterboard can take more weight per m than skimmed.

The same is true for rendered walls. If you're going to tile a block wall, render it but don't skim it.
