Tile backer board

Hi all..

I'm putting in tile backer board for my wet rooms and purchased the thin silver screws with it but my question is to the experienced can you use drywall screws to hang the backer board up with instead of these self tapping type screws.

its no more ply I'm using...

Personally no, dry wall screws have a purpose but not for cement boards....IMO

They might not be logged on but every time someone on here mentions plasterboard screw and hardie I bet the likes of phill Hobson and rainsco get a sore head!!!

Others on here use Turbo Gold from Screwfix.

The proper Hardie ones are expensive.

Plasterboard screws will have a problem driving through the concrete boards.


I have just re-read yr post................are you using those Marmox type boards? (not cement boards). Then 'yes' I use drywall screws with those big silver washers.

No it's called no more ply not marmox but is a cement board 12mm thick for the walls the reason for asking is the screws supplied are very thin although they are self tapping I assumed that drywall screws would do the job as well but I haven't tried and thought I would ask first.

its a 2 part fix as it requires mega glue to also secure it to the studs with these screws so will be well secured to the studs once fixed in place.

It will be well fixed but it still won't be waterproof!!!
Cement boards are water resistant not water proof.

Waterproofing isn't the issue it's just if it's an alternative to screw them up with drywall wall screws.
Waterproof taping the joints and ardex will waterproof the cement boards.

The mega glue is a waterproof sealer for the joints according to the instructions.

There's another thread going about screws & personally I wouldn't use drywall screws, I've used them in the past & got fed up with the heads snapping.
I use Turbo Golds from ScrewFix & have never had a head snap on them.

i use the ceramic coated hardei screws with this type of board dry wall screws are of no use as Stef said the heads will snap off.

Thanks for the info I will go for turbo gold screws as I have some so will use these for fixing up the no ply boards....

ive only ever used 6mm maybe that is why ive never had the problem with the heads, not once

I tried my drywall screws and they held these boards really well but I'm going to use the gold screws instead just in case...
