Tile Backing Boards

Hi,

I need some help if possible, About 2 months ago re-tiled my shower looks fantastic but what I didn't use is any tile backing boards between the wall and tile's / adhesive. I have noticed on the other side of the wall that there is some damp patches appearing I have looked for gaps / cracks in the grout but I cant seem to find any but obvousley its coming from somewhere. On the internet it says that if I used backing boards they would absorb any water that leaks through the tiles and not onto my wall??

My plan was to rip all the tiles off secure backing boards onto the wall and the re-tile but I think this may be more trouble then its worth as the shower tray / glass doors are quite expensive and I can see something getting damaged in the process. My idea is now is to secure backing boards to my old tiles brush with a waterprof membrane then re-tile / group on top of the backing boards.

If anyone has any other ideas that would be very much apreciated.

Welcome along to TF GRJOHNS, what is the substrate under your tiles currently?

Hi Bri,

All that is under the tiles at the moment is tile adhesive which are stuck directly to the wall. I have never done any tiling as large as this before and especially not in a shower enclosure maybe there was a bit of inexperience on me behalf.

Sorry what I meant was, what is the wall constructed of, is it plasterboard, stud wall, rendered, skimmed etc. Don't worry too much, there will be a solution.

My honest answer is im not 100% sure , we have the bricks that make the wall then we have plaster on top of that and that is what I have stuck the tiles too
