I agree about making sure walls are clean first, any greasy deposits will affect adhesion.
In the rare cases that I agree to tiling on top of tiles - always avoid if possible - you have to take into account weight & how well existing tiles are secured & how flat the surface - i always use cement based, flexible rapid setting adhesive. Then there is no possible problem with the adhesive not drying out. Tub adhesives rely on air & also a bit of suction from the substrate. With tile on tile there is no suction or absorbtion of moisture by the tiles.

Leatherface made a good point about the weight risk of tiling on top of tile, just to add to that, how do you know that the tiles you are going to tile onto aren't already on top of other tiles??? It is for this reason that I don't tile on top of tile, you don't know how many layers of tiles there are on the wall.

Very true varley mate and also you dont know how strong the substrate is either or how well the tiles where previously fixed...so when in dowt rip em off and start afresh.........

When tile on tile I tell the customer that the new tile is only as firmly fixed as the one undeerneath and it is only then that I go ahead with the job if the fully understand what problems can arise.

Exactly !!
This is the reason that, I will hardly ever tile in tile - the only reason that you will get asked to tile on tile is because the customer does not want to go to the expense of having them removed and prepping the walls. Forget it and move on to the next job !!
