Tile Onto Tiles???

Ok so i know the answer to this question but i want plenty of ammo in my answer to my customer. Customer wants me to tile over existing tiles in their old bathroom. I've said no but id look anyway, like i said its an old house and downstairs tiles are welded on with sand and cement so im guessing upstairs tiles will be too, i havent checked yet which they are keen not to get into the mess and expense of removing them, which i can understand. Thats the bones of it lads, I'm heading out mow so cant reply but all general answers would be much appreciated. Cheers :smilewinkgrin:

Weight limit of the substrate is one reason, also you can never be 100% sure how well the old tiles are adhered to the substrate, what if a handful of them are welded on but the rest are hanging on by the old grout? Plus, it quite often causes problems around pipes and architraves with the extra thickness being added to the wall.

If the old tiles have been on years like you say , then they are likely butt jointed and this will have expansion issues with another layer of tiles over the top... if possible it is always practical to remove and go with a single layer.
