Tile over Tile

Hello one and all.....

Just measured up a job, bathroom walls 16sqmtr. The customer wanted me to 'cut out' exisiting tiles where there is about six tiles which make a pattern of a dolphin and replace with new tiles of same size and colour. I explained what may or may not happen to her wall if i cut through and the potential for having to replace the whole wall as a result (one wall is a stud partition, bath side) I suggested tiling over all of the exisiting tiles which she has now agreed to.
My question is, what are the weight restrictions of a stud wall. From what i remember from my tiling course you are only allowed a certain weight and also this weight dictates the adhesive type you use.
Anyone with any experience in tiling over tiles i would appreciate your views on this.

Morning mate, 20kg per m2 if the plasterboard is skimmed, 32kg per m2 if it is bare plasterboard.

Morning, not sure on this as the tiles look as if they have been in place for many years....how do i tell? Also can i use a tubbed adhesive ie. BAL Grip or do i have to use a certain powdered type?

BAL grip does state that it is suitable for tile on tile applications, the thing with tile on tile is that you can never be 100% sure how sound the substrate is or how well the existing tiling is stuck to it, hence why 99% of people on here will advise against it. It can be done and I myself have done it, but it's not something I am very comfortable doing, it really is a bit of a lottery.

as bri says, i'd rip them off and start again. if you decide to tile over use spf adhesive not the bal grip. the spf will be better and half the price of the bal grip

As above best bet to remove as you don't know how its all fixed including the plaster .

tiling over tiles on walls is trouble.However sometimes I will do it on a floor only if they are solid and the customer wont take no for an answer.But again prob best avoided.

Thanks to all the feedback, my gut feeling is to tell her she needs to rip out and start again, dont want anything coming back to haunt me.
