Tiles coming away from bath panel

Help please: the tiles are beginning to come off my bath panel, which was installed as a new bathroom a year ago. The grout started to crack after a only a couple of months. The tiler insists that he used flexible adhesive and that it is due to movement of the bath panel. Is he correct? What can be done to avoid this happening? Would be grateful for any advice. Thanks.

What exactly is the bath panel made of? Ply? And how thick?

Thanks. I think ply, but would need to remove tiles to see. Are there specifications for correct thickness?

I'm not sure whether there are specifications for correct thickness regarding bath panels, but a lot of people have tiled on 6mm ply and the tiles have come away quickly.

just wish builders would use correct substrate tiling around bath area, or in shower room and just stop using timber as there is a lot better products that can be installed

Thanks Jay, They are loose. I've just had another look and there are also tiles coming away from boxing in behind WC.

Perhaps the panel hasn't been braced too well? Been to a lot of jobs where the bath panel has had movement in it and has needed stiffened.

a lot of builders use mdf, not saying this is the case in this instance, but it's totally unsuitable. I try and use S2 class adhesive on bath panels too. It needs to be highly flexible as there is a lot of movement with a bath filling and emptying

I had to repair something similar recently. The tiler/plumber had used mdf for the surround and side panel and fixed the tiles with tubbed adhesive. I pulled all the tiles off with my fingers, no adhesive was stuck to the mdf. I re-did with 12mm Hardie, steamed the old adhesive off and re-fixed with Mosaicfix.

if they know what they are doing they wouldent use ply it is not sutibale for any thing in the bathroom not bath panels or boxing :ban:

2x2 timber fram eat 400mm centres, 6mm hardibacker, Keraquick, Ultracolour and edge between bath and top tile to be siliconed....No failures yet

Some baths you cant get 2x2 in for the tile to be flush with the face of the bath, When this happens we would run the tops of the 2x2 off in the chop saw
