Tiles not holding to wall

Hi there

The questions asked might sound dumb but at my wits end now.

Busy re tiling bathroom after stripping old out and putting in new. Tiles used are 250 x 330 mm (9.8" x 13") and 8mm thick. Adhesive is one from the local DIY giant, CeraFix Non Slip (strength to BS5980 Class B).

Put the first lot up on Friday covering an area of approx 1 sq metre. Cracked on with some other odds and ends. Came back to find tiles slowly peeling away. Thought maybe not enough butter so cleaned wall and redid using a little more adhesive. Same area. Left over night (18 hrs) and got back to said wall to fit heated towel rail. After drilling holes (not through tiles) tiles started to peel away again. What I did notice was that the adhesive was not drying, instead seemed powdery.

Tried again today and same thing happening again....blasted tiles peeling away from wall.

Could it be duff adhesive? over half tub used and no blasted tiles on wall

The wall in question is plaster board, skimmed, and tiled previuosly.

Spread on wall first the first time, on tiles the second time and today both wall and tile.

Any hints tips advice much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1st i would prime the wall ( Not PVA).
Then throw that adhesive away and get some Bal, Ardex, Mapei ,Biscem anything but the stuff the Diy stores sell.

i was given a tip.... stick some gaffer tape to the wall for about half hour if the wall coating comes away with the tape then the wall isnt suitable for tiling .

I have a rule,NO TUB adh on bathroom walls etc,the only place i would consider tubs is on kitchen splashbacks!
Bag adhesive is far better.

I have been using powdered adhesive for a while now instead of tub adhesive and i definitely find its better, less slip etc. But substrate still has to be primed.

Tubbed adhesive is totaly fine on bathroom walls as long as it's the correct adhesive by a good make, and not B&Q slop.

Agreed Fekin. I use 95% tubbed gear and never a problem. Only when using larger format or natural stone products do i feel the need for bagged gear but what ever you feel comfortable with is the right way to go.

Is the wall dusty ??? if previously tiled have you repaired the plaster ???.

I'm guessing here but you need a clean dust free substrate to tile on....it may well need priming, the BS you refer to was changed over 5 years ago ....

oh ...........and change your adhesive ....................sorry i'll get my coat !!

It's a fabric based (very) sticky tape usually black in colour. Comes under various different names (duct tape or even Duck Tape but that is a trade name), but you could do the same test with parcel tape or other sticky tapes.
