Tiling on joists

Guys, I have a job on at the moment and the client wants to have the upstairs tiled out. The house is pre 1900 and the joists I've replaced in the ceiling don't bode to well for the floor being to good when we start boarding out. The customer is a big chap and I have serious concerns that the tiles will at some point pop due to movement.

We were going to board out with OSB or PLY and also nog the joists, but I'm concerned about the total weight as well.

What do you chaps think, is boarding out over super old joists always going to be a bad idea?

What size are the joists and over what size area.....

7x2 joists and the rooms are 14'x11. The house has had some shocking movement in the past, I've filled and repaired some whacking great cracks 3" wide and 7' long! I think things have settled now but everyone I ask seems to think it's only a matter of time before they move.

I see your point with those size cracks, perhaps a wood floor may be a better option.

That's the problem, I know he's going to moan and try for a tiled floor. I'd like to tile it as well as it would certainly look nice, but I don't want any come backs.

So I thought I'd ask the chaps that know

Just explain your concerns and don't get forced into it if you have reservations.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me! I'd suggest karndean or amtico..

If he wants tiles and the floor is not suitable, try suggesting Amtico/Karndean, looks like tiles and will take the movement.

I fit this too so always suggest it if the floor is unsuitable for tiles...

I think you can just say you'll tile it but perhaps give him a letter expressing your concerns if he persists, as a disclaimer to cover you.

You're not wrong Pete, but I've advised him today and he's fully aware of the possible outcome now. Still wants to go ahead with it mind. I'll be reading through the site and trying to get up to speed on the best possible way to proceed. I'll be ply lining it obviously and I'll try and T&G the ply if possible before fixing it down, it will also have rubber over the joists first.

Any other tips you chaps might have would be appreciated.
