Tiling on skimmed plasterboarded walls

Hi, im tiling one feature wall in my bedroom. The wall has been boarded and skimmed. it measures 2.35m high x 3.6m wide. the tiles measure 50cm x 17.5cm. What would be the best way to tile this (i.e priming and adhesive etc....). it is NOT a shower wall or in a moist room or have and water on it. please advise thanx

What are your tiles made of? It's worth bearing in mind that the maximum recommended weight for skimmed plasterboard is 20kg per m2.

they are ceramic.....and come in a box of 15 which covers 1.31 squared meters and the box weighs 26kg...

Assuming your wall is all over the place as its been skimmed there will likely be high and low spots so you will prob have a challenge getting the tiles flat! Having said that mapei kerraflex maxi allows adhesive bed not exceeding 15mm so this will give you half a chance if you a very good diyer! And prime with acrylic primer first. Most importand not to exceed the weight limit of 20kg pm2 for that wall though!

A bit too heavy then by the time you factor in adhesive. You could remove the skim for more hanging strength.

what a shame you had it skimmed , plaster board is a much better surface to tile and takes a lot more weight

yeah i know...wasnt planning on having it tiled....whats the best way around this now

Quite straight? Over 1800 level how much gap can you find? Are the tiles ceramic ?

If answers are ... Hardly any (2-3 mm) and yes then I would prime with acrylic primer then tile with cement adhesive!

Generally up here the plastering work can be very iffy in my experience, if I go to a job and informed its been plastered I really do expect the worst! Is much rather do my own prep work

I'd use a slow setting adhesive such as Adesilex P9 and prob an 8mm notch trowel. Once you've put a couple on, pull one off to check you're getting decent adhesive coverage. If not use a 10mm notch trowel. Prime first with Mapei Primer G, NOT pva.

your tiles/addy/grout will take you of the weight limit.a slightly thinner tile would be ok.

Yes he's probably a smidge over the 20kgs per sq mtr limit as advised by BS but only just. In any event, the BS is an advisory limit which must have a tolerance, to a degree. As long as the substrate is sound, I'd have no hesitation in putting those tiles on that wall. Blimey, lets not try and kill off tiling altogether eh.

Wilder there is only 1 or 2 I trust, have come across some truly shocking plastering work up here, honest, I've seen them fail dot dabbing a wall then having to reskim!

I agree! Make sure you get no less than 60% coverage and you should have no issues imo

when you tile a wall straight off the floor. the wieght of the wall tiles is transfered to the floor by vertical tiling so the floor will take up to 30% of the wieght if you were tiling at a 45 degre angle then all wieght would be on the board so you have no wieght issuses here tile away. they need a lott more work on bs not just stating what the vested intressed tell them so they can make more money. thats why its not law only advisery no bodys done the real work to back it up. just cut and pasted from the usa version thats where 15 mm ply came from when it was not even avalball in the uk

Good standards must apply but so must common sense. I've turned down much needed work in the past e.g. sticking up 12mm trav on freshly plastered bathroom walls (3 days old), that would have been 50% over the BS standard.
