Tiling on tiles

Hi
Due to time limits a customer wants me to put thin ceramic tiles ( aprox 15 mm x 25mm) on the old tiles. The walls are solid, old tiles on firmly. Do I need to prep the walls first or can I just start to putting tiles straight on? Also has anyone put tanking on old tiles- again the old tiles are very sound and wall solid.

Or should i walk away?

personally i wont fix onto exisiting tiles but yes it can be done the choice is yours

thankyou, yes the choice is mine, the customer has made theirs. But is there any prep needed?

I would always de grease the old tiles first before tiling over them. Most tile shop sell products for this. Then you can tile straight over them

Yes, you can tile over the exhisting tiles if you so wish. I did a hotel re-furb a couple of years ago, and they insisted on using BAL White Star.
Which I have to say, even though I'm not a big fan of tiling onto exhisting tiles,
No priming needed, and Bal guarantee'd it too.

how long does it take to dry before you can grout them about 7 days ?

No mate not at all, most of them you could grout the next day - they were SOLID.

There were the one or two in some of the rooms that had to be built out in places, but as there were so many rooms it wasn't a problem, just went off and tiled another - then grouted after say 2 or 3 days at the very most.

I think we are all aware that there are adhesives on the market that will adhere to a clean degreased tile surface. The burning question is who fixed the original tiles? and what adhesive did they use? are they fixed on skim? bonding?

In short will the substrate take the added weight? with the duty of care we all have to live with, if a wall debonds and kills someone, who is responsible? you can bet your boots it won't be Bal.

never heard of anyone having any probs with tiling over tiles with whitestar, as far as i know all companys would use whitestar for doing this

Same argument Tubs mate, Eco Prim is good stuff, but how are the original tiles fixed? It's a lottery.
