How are you all.

Up to now I have only been tiling friends and family porches and ive now got my 1st real paying floor tiling job its not very big only about 5 m2 . (This will pay for the parking ticket I got when i was card dropping lol) The last two that I have done I have tiled onto plywood, I cant remember if they said on my course that u can tile straight on to floor tiles or concrete, I know you can tile straight on to wall tiles does it count for floor tiling as well this would really save me time, the tiles are small mosaics and there are only a few shot ones all the others seem intact.

What would you do ?

Hi Julie i would recommend that you strip the floor back to the concrete.

I know this may seem like a lot of hard work but better to be safe than sorry.

It is not really adviseable to tile over floors at the best of times let alone when mosaics are involved as the individual mosaics do not have that much adhiesive holding each tile down , that is why certain tiles are blown at the min.

So like i said remove the tiles and charge for this .The floor might then need a thin layer of self leveling over it .

Prime the floor with a suitable acrylic primer then your set for tiling.

Hope this helps:thumbsup:

Hi julie
in an ideal world i,d suggest taking it down to the concrete ,unfortunately the messing about you will have removing the mosaic will probably give you a very bad surface to work with, and for what you can charge for a 5m2 floor i would say tile over it .
If you start taking up the floor you could open yourself up to problem's you are not experienced enough to deal with.

Hope that help's:thumbsup:

It's like anything else on here, without seeing it first hand it can be hard to judge.

What tiles are you tiling with?

Best way would be to strip down, but if you are sure the other tiles are sound and fixed well enough tile over them.
Also discuss this with your client, tell them that stripping would be best but could incure additional costs, but also tell them that if they want to save time and money you can tile over, but warn them of the risks.

Hope this helps.

I would say start how you mean to go on by not doing so you are asking for problems.

When i all goes wrong it will be your fault and your company name on the line , the customer will not tell friends and family that they ignored advice so no recommendations for you and as we all know without them work will soon dry up.

If it costs more this is something that the customer will just have to accept this if not then i would suggest that you walk away and explain that you are not willing to put your name to work that you cannot guarantee.

Hope this helps jules
