Tiling on to a painted wall

What sort of paint is it. Emulsion usually washes off.

Think it's emulsion although not 100%sure as its in a kitchen,I have a feeling it's a wipe able paint

Score the wall with a stanley knife and see how easily the paint chips off. Remember that the bond with the wall will only be as strong as the paint ! If it flakes off easily make a wall rake out of 2 bits of batten with nails or screws sticking through along the top to make a "rake". The more paint removed the better. Ready mixed adhesives set hard by losing their moisture into the tile and substrate. If theres a waterproof barrier on the wall it wont set as well. At least I think thats what I was taught

why not use a cementous adhesive ?

Cement based adhesive is fine cos its a chemical reaction. It'll still only be as strong as the paint your tiling to tho.

If it's a plasterboard wall then don't use the stanley, it will weaken the wall.

I've not tried it myself but I've read that you can apply some cheap tubbed addy onto the emulsion paint, leave it for a bit then scrape it off and the emulsion paint comes off too.

Will give the paint stripper a go next time,I sanded then scored with a paper scorer,then primed,then mosaics,thanks for the input guys.

Belt sander takes it off well.
