Tiling on to MDF flooring.

If an MDF floor in a fairly new house is in good condition can it be tiled on to direct?

Who on earth puts MDF as a flooring???

Rip it up, its nowhere near stable enough for tiling onto, let alone anything else. Reboard the floor in 22mm ply and then overlay with 6mm hardibacker.......then tile.

DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO TILE ONTO MDF.

I said MDF but probably chipboard, the standard flooring in new houses.

if its chipboard i agree with tony73 lay ditra or durabase with a 3mm trowl then tile in that. but make sure the floor is stable put a glass of water on it and see if it ripples when you walk around , if its bouncy you would have to reboard as cj advised

Can't say i've ever seen an MDF floor, can't say i've ever mistaken MDF for chipboard either. It's more than likely going to be chipboard mate.

If it's a new build i'd definately go along the lines of Ditra rather than over-boarding. New builds tend to move around a lot more than a house that has been stood for 100 years. You'll need a de-coupler certainly.

I would not think mdf would get past the building inspector. It is not suitable for flooring. Chip board is not much better tbo. Watch out for joist nd oard deflection which ditra will not suppress in any way. Jump on the loor and see if it bounces. If it does it needs beefing up before tiling

MDF or chipboard, the answer is "No" don't tile directly onto it. A cement board overlay, preferably hardiebacker 250 glued and screwed is my advice.

If it's deflection free I'd overboard and tile, personally wouldn't fit ditra directly to it

Would ditra not be preferable considering the building hasn't had time to settle fully/properly yet?

on chipboard I prefer something that is mechanically fixed, ditra doesn't counteract deflection only lateral expansion.

Hardiebacker doesn't counteract deflection either btw, but at least it's mechanically fixed.
