Tiling onto a painted floor

I have to lay some tiles onto a concrete floor.The floor has a good coat of floor paint.The paint has been on the concrete for a few years and is not flacking.I was thinking of putting on a layer of PVA on then tiling.Is this a good idea.

No its not

your best plan is to sand the paint off , I know its hard work but you would be relying on the adhesion of the paint to the floor to adhere your tiles

pva is a definate no no

PVA :yikes: don't use PVA in tiling mate.

Is there no way you can't scrape the paint up first?

If i can get the paint off,should i tile straight onto the concrete.

As above paint has to come off, prime concrete with SBR overlay with slc. would be best get nice flat surface. SBR if dusty tile with suitable adhesive ie Mapei Keraquick

you could use an uncoupling matting such as watec 3e, there is no need to stick this to the substrate therefore you wouldnt need to remove the paint ,hope this helps

I have heard of this method, not used it sounds like an old method. Pure decoupling we used to use building paper, before that was sand. Any medieval tilers remember building paper?:yikes:

as you know removing floorpaint can be very difficult and time consuming
