Hi Guys/Gals,

I have just been to look at a job, its a balcony off a bedroom. Its a timber structure and its the same timber as decking, the beams are about 120x100 on the floor, has anyone ever tiled one of these? I am thinking of movement issues etc, its about 9 mts in total and will be exposed completely to all weather conditions. cheers . If anyone has done a job like this were you day rate or price, I am thinking two days plus materials.

cheers, Dom.

We have recently had a customer that tiled their balcony. Well, two of them actually. We were told it was covered and that it had 22mm Exterior Grade ply onto joists. When his tiles cracked not too long after being layed, we went out to the job to find it wasn't covered and he had used 6mm shuttering ply :yikes: The floor was like a trampoline!!!!

Moral of the story, prep is the key (Which I know you know :) )

I think any "usual" construction to stiffen the balcony for tile laying will have too much hight & weight.
Something unusual is needed like e.g. covering the balcony wood with V4A stainless steel sheets, than a decoupling matting laid with epoxy adhesive on the sheets and than laying the tiles with S1-flexible addy on the matting. That comes close to laying tiles on ships. Small size tiles should be preferred. And 2 days is not enough.

Interesting, how solid is the structure? I bet you could get away with 18mm ply, screwed right into joists, bal fastflex and epoxy grout. That would allow for a fair bit of flexing. Suppose being outside its gonna be prone to expansion/contraction due to elements. Im sure a man of your calibre will come up with a solution!
