I have come across a few threads on Tilers Forum re: tiling onto chipboard. Could someone give me some quick advice, as my issue is a little different to what's been discussed so far.

I want to tile my kitchen floor. It is concrete and on top of the concrete is c. 30mm waterproofed chipboard. (There used to be engineered floorboards on top, which I have taken off.)

The chipboard seems pretty solid, though the floor is not completely flat on one side of the room – it slopes away a little from the centre. I have been told self-levelling compound should not be used on chipboard. Removing the chipboard is not an option.

I spoke to one tile shop (Topps Tiles) who advised nailing and gluing 6mm Hardibacker board on top of the chipboard first – and using standard flexible adhesive underneath. Is this the best idea?

I will of course use more flexible adhesive on top of the Hardibacker when I actually tile.

Any help gratefuly received.

Mapei fibre plan can be used over chipboard if required..but the substrate needs to secure.
WHERE TO USE
Fiberplan is used for interior levelling, smoothing
and removing differences in thickness from 3 to
10 mm on properly fixed timber substrates and
wooden boards, where good resistance to loads and
traffic is required. Fiberplan is suitable for wheeled
chair traffic and for underfloor heating systems.
Fiberplan can only be used internally.
Some application examples
• Smoothing old and new timber floors, floor boards,
chip-board panels, plywood, parquet.

Personally if the floor is floating ,as in not on joists then i would be dubious about tiling it.
