Tiling onto Marley tiles???

Hey up.

A freind wants his kitchen floor tiling. Its a council house. He currently has 9inch light beige hard/rigid plastic tiles down. I managed to break a corner of one up and it breaks into pieces. They are tiled onto a concrete substrate and there is a black sticky adhesive with a wafer thin brown paper mixed in it. (from the corner bit I broke up).

The tiles are of sound condition. I only managed to break a bit up because of the new kitchen units are thinner than the old, so there is a 1 inch gap all round.

What are my options prior to tiling? FROM MY SEARCHING IVE READ THESE MOST PROBABLY HAVE ASBESTOS IN THEM.

Ive also read I can tile over them if they are of good condition which they are...

Ive also read of people using a sbr slurry??? prior to tiling onto them? Could someone explain the details of this. I usually use mapei/tilegiant products...

I was initially going to take them up with heavy duty scraper, but ive been scared of because of the ASBESTOS.

P.S could I use a 2 part self levelling floor screed over the top of them,.??? Then tile away a few days later?

IF! they are indeed sound, then clean them with sugar soap.. then prime with SBR mixed cement 50/50 ratio... as it is tacky then slc over the top.. that will create a megga bond then.. but there are primers alone that will do the same job but cost damn site more than a slurry method.

And the slurry method works a treat. ..

Hello

When you say SBR, do you mean the BAL bond 1L tub you buy from topps tiles.? Then mix that 50/50 with cement. i.e a bag of portland cement or cement based flexi addy?

Then when thats tacky use the 2 part, slc that i mentioned straight on top of this? or will it be ok just to start tiling once the slurry is tacky?

Have I got this right so far?

The 2 part self levelling compound that im on about takes a few days to dry out. When its dry should I prime it prior to tiling?

BAL SBR is good but very expensive.. I get SBR from builders merchant or B&Q warehouse..


Use a one part fibre slc that dries in about 3 to 4 hrs..

what is the 1 part fiber you talk of? Ive only ever used latex slc cempolatex..

Weber floor flex is one i use and mapei renovation screed is another...

Yes 50/50 portland cement.. leave to go tacky then slc..

My local builders have got everbuild SBR, is this decent stuff?

The floor is 10sqm. Is it just a good guess of how much cement to add or do you measure exact? How do you spread it on the floor, - roller?

Do you walk on the SBR slurry whilst its tacky to do the screeding where you spread it first??

That SBR is fine.. i have used it..

use a masonry type brush.. don't worry if it starts to go off a bit.. just don't leave it too long before pouring slc..

Do you walk on it to get to the beginning to start the screeding? Bit messy while its tacky

I was just on the BAL SBR spec sheet and it says you can use SBR as a primer straight onto the vinyl tiles prior to tiling. No slurry or SLC. What are your thoughts on this info.

Yes sbr can be used that way.. but i prefer a fail safe method.. and only a thin coat is required..
