Discuss tiling onto paint, will priming be better than not? in the British & UK Tiling Forum area at TilersForums.com.

I've recently recommended to a customer that before tiling his kitchen I'd strip the paint off the walls as its not the best idea to tile onto paint, & I wont guarantee the work if I'm tiling onto paint of course he didn't like the idea of this as it would cost more.

Could Anyone advise if priming the paint would make it a slightly better surface to tile onto than just the paint.

it would make it a slightly better surface mate, but realistically you want the paint off,i would NEVER give a guarantee on a painted surface,in fact i would refuse to do the job.you do it,tiles come off in a couple of months, its your reputation that suffers, and there are too many cowboys out there already, dont get yourself labelled as one mate

Usually I wouldn't tile onto paint, but unless I can talk him out of it I cant really afford to lose work over it, I've made it quite clear that I Won't guarantee my work on paint, he's happy about that.

He's removed old tiles which were stuck onto the paint & paint is still on the walls, Its a kitchen splashback so there's not a great deal of weight on the wall.

Think i might run my sander over the paint & not charge for the few hours of sanding, just for the piece of mind.

Thanks guys

Wall paper steamer, paint scraper and some elbow grease and it usually comes of no problem,i`d rather take paint off whether its good or bad.

And the above is the correct answer, If the customer won't take it off and won't pay a little extra to have it taken off then i always Walk. the worst thing ya can do is to prime onto emulsion, it actually softens it up...........

do the tape test , as a rule of thumb when fitting ceramics if the wall is painted put some duck tape on the wall leave it for 15minutes then pull it off if any paint comes off on the tape you will need to remove ALL the paint before tiling , if the paint doesnt come off you will probably be all right but probably isnt a guarantee so if you are a by the book man (woman)insist it comes off
