Tiling onto paint...

Hi Everyone,
am about to tile bathroom and two of the walls were painted and papered. Have removed all paper and what paint that will come off (using scraper and wire wool).
Read some posts on here that said scoring would provide enough of a key for adhesive and others who said you need to remove all paint. However, most of the paint is welded on. I opted for knocking a groove about 2mm deep into the plaster with a bolster in a criss-cross pattern. Grooves between 10-25mm wide and about 90mm apart. The tiles are 450mm x 250mm. Do you reckon this will do the job?

You should be fine with that. It is always better to remove all the paint as you will end up bonding to the paint and not the wall. If however the paint just isnt going to come off then keying it should be fine, providing that you do not damage the wall in the process and that you prime correctly and use a suitable adhesive

Just a thought, what are the walls under the paint?

one is a concrete block exterior that has been skimmed and the other is a stud which also seems to have been skimmed. on closer inspection the stud seems to have concrete or something like it under the skim and have hair (horse?) on in interior

one other thing - if i prime with BAL APD will mapei superflex (dry bag) be ok for addy? half price of BAL spf
oh yeah, should i prime the remaining paint too?

Yes prime the paint as well. If you are planning to use Mapei adhesive then I would use Mapei's primer G to prime with.
