Tiling over bitumastic adhesive (I think)

20 years ago I laid two areas of ceramic floor tiles, each over 20 sq m. I had removed the thermoplastic tiles from the top of the screed and this left areas of some form of bituminous adhesive underneath. These seemed to have been used extensively on solid floor in the 60's.

I seem to remember that I removed any loose areas and applied a pva water prime. I tiled on top with a powdered cementatious adhesive. All tiles are still OK.

I will shortly have a similar situation tiling in the bathroom and toilet area.

Any tips are welcomed. Please.

Dont use pva, use an acrylic bonding agent such mapei g. If the bitumen is solid then you could cover it with a self leveller. What tiles are you fixing?

Yes, I know pva was probably not the best. I didn't know 20 years ago though!

Tiles 325mm ceramics. I was going to use ISBR primer and Rapidset powdered adhesive and Bal superflex grout. I intend to seal the grout with Fila grout protector.

I am a bit iffy about self leveller. I used it in some areas of the kitchen where there had not previously been thermoplastic tiles and no bitumen. But I have seen it laid over bitumen areas prior to tiling and it has lost bong resulting in lifting tiles.

Did you use a primer in the past? I would recommend an epoxy primer in these cases.

In the past I used pva, This time I intended to use ISBR primer, not sure if this is epoxy. I will check.
