tiling over paint

Depends what the paint is on,
If its on skim then it needs to come off,
If its onto plasterboard then it will ok as you won't get paint off of the sheet, Depending how many coats of paint its had though.

Who scores , and who removes it completely ?

I don't score plasterboard because it weakens it but I did start my working life training as a decorator in 1971 and I know what paint is going to stay there and the ones which will not.

Some walls I have scraped and it come off in sheets....

I treat paint as knackered plasterboard. Off it comes. Too labour intensive for scrapibg and steaming off.

That gives me the opportunity the plumb up the walls.

An alternative to removing or scoring the paint is to mechanically fix Orbry tile backer board to the surface and then tile direct to the board.

Most all surfaces can be tiled on to providing that they are sound and stable. Easy and simple test prior to tiling onto a painted surface. Stick strips of cello tape in strategic places on the areas to be tiled. Leave for approximately 1 hour until the adhesive has a firm hold to the paint. Peal away and if the paint comes away on the back of the tape it is not suitable. Always follow adhesive manufacturers guidelines for preparation required prior to applying the adhesive. Also bear in mind the restrictions on weight of tile and its adhesive bed beforehand. Bob Howard MBE

Ardex p4 is a good primer for paint but obv the paint can't be loose. Has to be solid , otherwise score and scrape

why not use a SBR primer or something like WBA ????
or plasterboard walls mist coated then i still use a primer
plastered walls i score them up with a knife brush off the flakes and use BAL SBR primer.

Try as Bob recommended, tape on the wall.....

I usually do a tape test with duck/gaffer tape.

I have know of people tiling their bathrooms/kitchens over painted walls about 10-15 years ago and not one tile has came off.

How would one remove paint of a wall before tiling.
