Tiling over stainless steel

Is it possible to tile over a stainless steel wall mounted sheet ?

Someone asked me today if they would be able to tile over a sheet of stainless steel on a wall in a commercial kitchen, and as I have never been asked such a question or ever been in that possition I could only answer with a gut instinct, and said no.

Was I right, or can it be done, propperly

i wouldnt do it,,most sheet metal work in commercial kitchens has a lot of flex/movement in it usually held securely to the wall with fasteners/screws covered with caps but when you go to clean it it flexes,i can imagine someone going to clean the tiles and eventuall;y they would break away with the movement.

Is there no way it can be removed first? This would surely be the best option. I would have said the same as you

why on earth would they want to tile over sheet metal anyway? tiles are much harder to keep clean than sheet metal,,maybe you could stick your tiles up with the existing grease thats running down there walls they are trying to hide?:lol::lol: its called kebab fix:yikes:

yes you can feks but check with your adhesives tech dept first..

I was told they wanted it tiled instead because they couldn't get it looking clean propperly

Though they do say it's solid and no flex in it, but I've already said it would need to come down anyway, just wanted to know if there was anything I didn't know about with metal sheeting.

if they cant get it clean tel em to use ENDBAC(available in liquid and powdered form) its a kitchen approved cleaner and de-greaser and some elbow grease. tiling it just sounds a lazy way out. but then if your quiet rip it off and start a fresh!!

Hello Fekin, "long time no see". And refering to your question the answer ist YES.

We had this on some cruiser ships where the passenger lifts were inhoused to stainless steel for design purposes. Later the ships got "an upgrade" and these steel plates were covered with marble and the tiler took a 2 component cement based adhesive of S2-flexibility quality. He slightly grinded the stainless steel by hand first for getting a more rough surface for a better adhesive contact.

Hey Martin, it has been a while mate.

Thanks for the info, it was the "smoothness" of the metal that was making me think about the adhesive having very little to grip to.
