tiling walls

hi all, ive got 33cmx 24cm tiles to tile my en suite and wall.

I am re tiling the cubicle shall i tank or seal the plasterboard wall when i take the tiles off ? i havent taken the tiles off yet but hopefully i can strip without damaging the plasterboard

the other walls have got bathroom emulsion on them, is it ok tile on top or can i buy some bonding to help the adhesive to stick the tiles to the walls

Hello P M..

IMO it is wise to tank shower walls if the option is there to do it..

You might find that taking the tiles off could destroy the walls, it just depends on how well secured they are to start with etc..

So if they do get damaged then it is usually quicker just to replace the boards in that area.

As for the other walls, it best practise to try and sand off any paint.. are the walls skimmed ..?

A bagged adhesive is best especially in a bathroom, have you got a tile giant near by?

yep or a topps, when i tiled the bathroom walls they were the same but i never treated the walls then maybe i was just lucky the tiles never fell off lol

Ok, remove the emulsion then..prime with an acrylic primer and use a single part modified adhesive..

Hey poshman, yep replace plasterboards with a moisture board. Also for the other walls use your stanley knife and scrape a grid patteren on the walls so when the adhesive is troweld on it will grip to the plasterboard.Screw the exsisting plaster slabs with drywall screws to in sure they are strong enough to take the weight of the tile,also use bags of flexible white adhesive on the the walls (No buckets). Cutting into plasterboard like that makes the boards lose their integrity.. the paper on the face is intact for a reason,, rigidity..
