They say back buttering, I just call back skimming to fill the profile on the back of the tile but an interesting vid...expected to see Ray, Lee and Garythetiler showing up.

imo they should of just back butterd the tile and laid it without the bed already laid and tested it that way

Interesting I guess back buttering makes sense, what sort of size tile would you be using to necessitate back buttering? Presumably you don't need to do some with smaller tiles?

Did you see how easy the tiles came away from the ply,makes you think that ply is a thing of the past.

I always back skim, the bond is far superior. It means that the substrate and the tile have had the adhesive keyed to them, also, it's essentially sticking adhesive to adhesive which is always going to give a better bond.

Jeezus so if you have say a 30 metre floor of 200mm tiles you would back butter each one?
Id sooner cut my balls off with a rusty bread knife!!!!

Surely bonding is down to trowel size and adhesive consistency.

I always back skim, imo gives a better bond and suction control. I rarely back butter as I do most of the prep myself (esp walls) and get the substrate flat before I even fix a tile.

Stone tiles = Always back skim for bonding issues and consistency of shading on moisture sensitive stones.

Porcelain tiles = more heavy profile to back so back skim for easier solid bed.

Ceramc tiles = no profile worth worrying about , so notch trowel and wiggle wiggle


Any tiler worth his salt will know this..

Adhesive bites into ceramic a bit better so wouldn't bother with skimming in some situations but for anything over 300x300 I would. Don't think a true solid bed is ever really attainable but back skimming certainly helps the coverage and gives a more solid bond.

I often get criticised by other "tilers" because I back butter medium/large format tiles which takes longer and they don't bother even though clearly recommended by BS and adhesive manufacturers. What I found more interesting in the video is that I've only seen one other tiler keying in the adhesive to the substrate before combing it! In the video it also states that non modified adhesive is recommended to go with the ditra mat (something I've also seen on this forum or another). Can anyone clarify this as generally i'm fixing porcelain which needs a modified adhesive to stick to it.

Can i just add ... The video is american and Schluter.com do state unmodified adhesive..

So if you want correct advice then plz stick to UK regs etc.. and schluter.uk say modified is ok.
